The worked stone marks the division between Stainmore and Brough townships. The stone is on the outside of a slight bend, raised up on a bank.

The road is the former turnpike between Appleby and Teesdale, which means the turnpike trust had to mark all the civil boundaries. 1817 Often the trust could not afford to do this initially and milestones and boundary stones appeared much later.

The inscriptions read.
"Township of North Stainmore"
and
"Township of Brough"

The stone is marked on Ordnance Survey maps.
