The Parish church of St.Mary the Virgin on Holly Island is the oldest building here,it is the only building to retain some work from the Saxon period, which can be seen as an arch in the wall dividing the nave from the chancel,as well as the typical Saxon "Door" on the outside of the building.
The church was built between 1120 and 1145,but with some stonework which is pre 1066.
The church has many pilgrimages each year, with the annual numbers being over 650,000.
The church is surrounded by a well kept cemetery.
Holy Island can only be visited at low tide by the 3 mile causeway, the tide time tables need to be checked carefully so as not to find yourself stuck on the Island or 5 hours.
