In late Autumn 1987, a film crew descended on Durham and other nearby locations to film the movie “Bull Durham.” Much of the filming was done at Durham Athletic Park, home of the real-life Durham Bulls minor league baseball team.
Scenes from the movie were shot in other locations in Durham and Raleigh, as well as many of the minor league ballparks in the region.
The film crew couldn’t shoot during baseball season, so the movie was filmed in late Fall. Because of this, the grass at the Durham Athletic Park had to be touched-up with green paint. This is also why the breath of the actors can be seen in many of the night scenes.
Director/Writer Ron Shelton was formerly a minor league player in the Carolina League.

Here's Durham Athletic Park today showing the infield and right field. The ballpark is now owned by the city of Durham and is closed except for special events. This shot was taken through the fence. The Durham Bulls moved to their new ball park in 1995.
