In the Central Square area of Cambridge, where Massachusetts Avenue, Magazine Street, River Street, Western Avenue, and Prospect Street all come together, there is a great red church, known as the First Baptist Church, that stands near the merging of these roads. This church has a very tall steeple, which is easily visible from several vantage points. In fact, the final (metal cap) of the steeple was added to the National Geodetic Survey as an intersection station in 1934.

The steeple is a conical steeple with eight sides, with copper covering the corners. The slate roof has alternating bands of grey and red. At the very top is a finial with a green spike which could be a lightning rod.

There is a plaque on the church that has a date of 1881 on it, so the steeple could have been built as early as that date. The steeple was first 'monumented' in 1934, so it was built before this year.

A web site for the congregation could not be found. The one provided is to the benchmark page on geocaching.com (MY3091).
