The Royal is the oldest part of what is now the Royal & Derngate Theatres. It opened in 1884 with the Opera House. It cost £12,000 to build and was designed by Charles Phipps. It opened with a production of Shakespeare’s "Twelfth Night".
The modern Derngate Theatre is joined onto the Royal and was built in 1983. The whole area was refurbished and reopened in 2006 after a £14 million redevelopment. The University of Northampton describes the facilities today:
