Northampton General covers a large area in this part of town with many car parks and different sections. This is the Billing Road entrance where there are some interesting plaques on the old building. They read as follows:

'HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS
PRINCE ALBERT VICTOR KG.
& SGW. of the Grand Lodge of England,
assisted by the free & accepted Masons of the Provinces
of Northamptonshire & Huntingdonshire,
laid the Foundation Stone of the Wing.
October the eighteenth, 1887'

Above the entrance door is the following:
'ERECTED BY
VOLUNTARY SUBSCRIPTION
1793'

Another plaque reads:
'THIS WING was erected ......
JUBILEE
HER MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY
QUEEN VICTORIA
Annus Domini 1837'

Northampton Hospital offers a range of NHS services on the official website described as so:

'Northampton General Hospital is located close to the centre of Northampton. We serve a local population of 360,000, have an annual turnover of more than £190million, 614 beds, 14 operating theatres, ITU and HDU facilities.

As a recognised cancer centre, we provide specialist care to a catchment population of 880,000. We are also developing local renal services and cardiology services as a sub-specialty of medicine with a capital investment of around £25million.

Northampton is one of the oldest towns in the country and, in 1138, was one of the first towns to establish a hospital – St John’s. The sick, poor and needy had always been given food and shelter in the monasteries but, when these were abolished by Henry VIII in about 1535, there was no provision for the sick. There were then comparatively few hospitals in the country until the 18th century.

In 1743 Dr James Stonhouse came to Northampton and, through his efforts, a subscription list was opened to provide an infirmary for the benefit of the local community. The infirmary opened on 29th March 1744 and during its first five months the infirmary treated 103 inpatients, who occupied 30 beds, and saw 79 outpatients.

The first annual report, published in September 1744, states that ‘HERE ARE NOW ADMITTED THE POOR, SICK, LAME …. AND NO MONEY GIFT OR REWARD is taken of them or their friends on any account whatever.

The hospital moved to its present site in 1793, and from there the hospital has grown in line with the local population, and we have continued to uphold the NHS principles of providing care that is free at the point of delivery.'
