The Duke of Bedford swept away all the original building in the area north of the River Tavy. He then had built the Pannier market, the Town Hall and Duke Street area. It remains largely unchanged to this day and gives Tavistock a very elegant town centre.
There is a similar date with a crown and a "B" on other Duke of Bedford Buildings. See West Bridge cottages- (visit link)
Year of construction: 1864

Full inscription:
Crown 1864 B
