MTS Place is actually 2 buildings; a taller building at 333 Main St & a second shorter building right beside it at 191 Pioneer Ave. Originally known as Manitoba Telephone System when it was government Crown Corporation, MTS is the primary telecommunications carrier in Manitoba. MTS became a publicly held corporation in 1996 when the government sold it to private shareholders.

In 1950, it was the first telephone system to have automatic switching equipment.
In 1959, Winnipeg was the first urban area to implement the 9-9-9 Emergency Number (forerunner to 9-1-1)
