Until the Industrial Revolution the River Thames had a good salmon population. Now that the water quality is much improved, there remains the problem that the Thames and its tributary the Kennet have many wiers, which prevent fish from travelling upstream.

The project has created a chain of twelve "fish ladders" or "fish passes" which are water ramps beside the weirs up which the fish can swim, with the aim that salmon can reach their spawning areas upriver.

In addition, local populations of fish can move about more easily, which helps the whole river ecology.
