One of my favorite views of Boston is along Memorial Drive by MIT, where Back Bay and Beacon Hill are framed by the Charles River Basin.

There are wonderful views of Boston all along Memorial Drive, which runs along the Charles River Basin (a manmade lake that separates Boston from Cambridge). This location, by the MIT sail pavilion, provides the best view of the Back Bay section of Boston, where the Prudential and Hancock Towers stand above other condominium, office buildings, hotels and brownstones.

Parking is often a problem anywhere in the Boston-Cambridge area. There is on-street parking that is a bit hazardous (cars go over 40 mph here right by a parked car). Try one of the side roads by MIT. There is a wide grassy area and sidewalk, so as you are observing and taking pictures, be aware of the second hazard: night time joggers.

The view is a 180 view of the Charles River and city. Prominently placed are the two tallest towers of the city: the Prudential Center, a square building with two sets of white lights ringing the top, and the Hancock Tower, a glass skyscraper which is especially thin looking from this angle as you are looking at the side of the structure. Other features visible include the Sheraton Hotel (the name in red is visible to the right of the Pru), the John Hancock Building (a shorter building with a pyramid roof and a colored set of lights below the flagpole), the Citgo sign (far right), Fenway Park (as in this picture, it may be visible from the bright lights), and the state house (on the far left, a gold dome). You may also see lighted row boats pass by while you are there.
