The flag of Sussex County dates back to 1974 and represents the County's Dutch and English influnces. The 3 bars are drawn from the flag of the Netherlands, and the sheaf of wheat is drwan from the seal of Sussex County adopted by William Penn in 1683.
The flag was designed by William C. Scott of Selbyville, DE who was a member of a county bicentennial committee charged with organizing activiites leading up to the American bicentennial in 1976. Scott took over the task of designing a county flag - one which is applauded by vexillologists as it isn't merely a seal on a blank field.
