Flatford lock - Waterway Locks, Planes and Lifts on Waymarking.com

Between 1705 and 1713 ,work was undertaken to make the river Stour navigable .All watermills on the lower 23 miles of the river were bypassed from Sudbury to Brantham tide-mill. Thirteen locks were built and thirteen staunches raised the water level,so that Stour lighters, each with a load of 13 tons,were able to navigate the Stour. One of these original locks was Flatford old lock
Flatford new lock was built in 1838 ,the old lock chamber was filled in to become part of the island.
