'Hungry Hiker Cafe
- The cafe reopens its doors

Working with Bournemouth Borough Council, the new look 'Hiker Cafe' at Hengistbury Head has reopened its doors and Bournemouth Borough Council unveils plans for further improvements to the area.

The much loved Hiker Café at Hengistbury Head plays an important role in enticing visitors to this Site of Special Scientific Interest and Ancient Monument.

The proprietor of The Hiker Café Debbie Green, recently joined forces with Bournemouth Borough Council to put together a refurbishment programme to refresh and revive this pivotal facility.

Improvements that have been made to The Hiker Café include;

The creation of a larger internal seating area ensuring better access for customers and staff around the facility
Brand new contemporary furniture to improve the aesthetics and layout of the café
A revived menu - whilst keeping those popular family favourites!
The addition of canvas prints on the walls of the Iron Age archaeology at Hengistbury
Head with explanations of how this Age had an impact on the area.
Improvements around the Hiker Cafe at Hengistbury Head are set to continue this week. Bournemouth Borough Council has started work on a new turning circle for the land train and improving the visitor information facilities.

The council will also be investing in the landscaping and accessibility surrounding the approaching area of the Hiker Cafe by;

Increasing the external seating arrangements
Putting up new interpretational signage with a plasma screen connected up to webcams focusing on the habitats of surrounding wildlife.
Further signage will be put up around the reserve with interesting information about the historical development of Hengistbury Head the types of wildlife to look out for which will appeal to youngsters, families and nature lovers alike.

Mark Holloway, Senior Community Parks and Countryside Officer for Bournemouth Borough Council has been working on the new canvas interpretation prints in the café and the plasma screens.

He said;

“We have over 1 million visitors to Hengistbury Head each and this will be the first phase of a plan to provide much needed visitor information facilities at Hengistbury Head.'

He continued;

“The new plasma screens will allow us to offer our visitors, videos of the wildlife, slide shows and up to the minute news of wildlife sightings, weather, tides and walks and talks and live images from around the reserve. We are very excited about the new addition of a state of the art and innovative approach to raising awareness and understanding of the Nature Reserve. '

Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Economy and Tourism is thrilled that the improvements to Hengistbury Head are generating positive feedback from visitors.

He said;
“Hengistbury Head has an intriguing history and the refurbishment of the Hiker Café and the work that Bournemouth Borough Council have started work on are all steps towards ensuring that visitors - now and in the future - can enjoy their visit and all that Hengistbury Head has to offer.”

We have always found it to be a friendly, welcoming cafe with a good choice of food and drink on offer. There are public toilets, large information signs describing the headland and superb views across Christchurch harbour.
