Come visit the 'roots' of the environmentalism and nature awareness at the place where Henry David Thoreau built a cabin in the woods and lived for two years in virtual solitude. It was here he had experienced the wonders of nature from 1845-1847 and wrote about his experiences in the book Walden, published in 1854.

At the parking lot is a replica of that house. It is a cozy abode that had a bed, a table, a chair and a stove with chimney. Behind it is the shed. A statue of Thoreau stands by the house. A sign describes the house nearby.

When you are through, you can go to the actual site (no house) where he lived. Take a map and walk on the north side of the pond to the site. People flock to this location to be where he stayed! Another sign desribes this location.

The time given is for the whole experience of seeing the house, walking to the site, then completing the walk around the pond, pausing to take in the views.

Walden Pond Reservation is located along Rte 126 about 1/2 mile south of the intersection with Route 2.
