The Salt Tower of the
Tower of London has preserved many of the etchings and markings left by the prisoners that it has held.
The informational plaque regarding this etching reads:
The 'E' contained within the heart is thought to stand for Elizabeth. Dated 14 August 1556, it is signed by John Batiste Castiglione, the Italian tutor to Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I). Castiglione also inscribed the name of fellow prisoner Christopher Perne. You can see another inscription by Castiglione in the Broad Arrow Tower.
