Private Murray was a member of Company H, 11th South Carolina Infantry. He was born on June 10, 1846 and died on November 25, 1952. Private Murray was the last surviving South Carolina Civil War Soldier.

Over fifty years ago, his funeral was attended by more than 5000 people, including the Governor and Senator Strom Thurmond. Two years prior to Private Murray's death, then Governor Thurmond found out that he was the final veteran, at 104 years of age, and appointed Farm Bureau executive, James Rogers to plan a funeral that was inevitable.
