Construction on Washington County Courthouse was begun in 1866 with construction of the basement which was used as the jail. The courthouse was completed in 1876. The two story brick building is constructed of bricks made on site. Much of the original woodwork remains in place. The building is topped by a cupola, in the tower below the cupola is the gallows, designed for hangings for criminals so sentenced.
The courthouse served in that capacity until 1960 when it was then used for county offices for many years and is now used as the St. George Chamber of Commerce.
