Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux were relocated out of Minnesota in the mid-1860's to places in South Dakota and Nebraska.
Tribal recognition in Minnesota did not occur again until 1969.
Slowly the Tribe began to rebuild a community, but it was not until 1982 when gambling was permitted that the Tribe was able to invest large amounts of capital improvements into the community - including many facilities available to non-Tribal members.
