The church was founded in in 1200,about the time of the Norman Conquest,and the oldest part of the present church are the jambs of the North doorway which have been dated to the 13th.century,the unbuttressed tower which was built in 1500 and has eight bells,the nave is 70 feet in length.
William Wordsworth was a frequent visitor to the church and he wrote of it affectionately,at the time he attended Hawkshead village school.
