St.John the Baptist church at Edlingham was built not only for worship but for defense,the massive 14th.century tower has narrow split windows,which indicates it was where villagers could take refuge in times of raids from the Scots.
The earliest part of the church is the nave,which dates to the mid 11th.century,it was partly rebuilt in the 12th.century,and a tower added in the 14th.century.
The church is now a Grade 1 listed building,making it a building of the highest importance.
