Fleet Street was until the 1980's the home of the British newspaper industry, with all national daily a Sunday newspapers being based on Fleet Street. This changed with the introduction of new technology replacing the old "hot metal" printing, as the papers followed the lead of News International (owners of The Sun and The Times) in moving to London Docklands. This ended an association with printing and publishing dating back to 1500. The term "Fleet Street" is still used as nickname for the newspaper industry.
Fleet Street is named after the River Fleet, a river which is now culverted and hidden. It flows beneath Farringdon Street, past the Eastern end of Fleet Street to the Thames.
On the Monopoly board it is one of the red properties along with the Strand and Trafalgar Square, three places on the North bank of the Thames between the old cities of London and Westminster.
The picture is taken looking to the West along Fleet Street from Ludgate Circus.
