Ross Castle is not a castle but a hill which has been occupies be past civilisations such as the Iron Age. In more recent times it was given to the National Trust by Sir Edward Grey, who was Foreign Secretary in the years 1905-16.

The Viewfinder consists of a walled stone square and on each of the four walls is a steel viewfinder describing what can be seen in that direction.

The viewfinder itself was erected as a memorial to Arthur Blenkinsop MP.
