The World Peace Gate is located at the west entrance of Olympic Park in Seoul, Korea. Standing 24m,it features a mural by artist Baik Kum-Nam, and an etreral flame with the Seoul Peace Declaration inscribed. It was built for the 1988 Olympic Games.

Built in 1988 for the XXIV Olympiad in Seoul, the World Peace Gate towers nearly 80 feet (24m) and features a colorful mural depciting the four spirits by Korean artist Baik, Kum Nam. Beneath the gate is an eternal flame with an inscription of the Seoul Peace Declaration which appears below.

The Olympic Park has been maintained as a venue, not only for sports, but for many cultural events and as a large preserve in the bustle of the city where people can relax and enjoy walking along the paths of the old Mongchon Fortress with views of the city, or visit several museums in the park. Nearby is Lotte World, one of Korea's premier theme parks.




SEOUL PEACE DECLARATION

"Deep in their souls, peoples on this earth regardless of ideology, race or religion, share one commonal goal to live in peace free from fear of war and violence. For it is only through peace among men and nations that the universal longing for happniess can be fulfilled.

Cumulative human experience dictates us on the occasion of the Games of XXIVth Olympiad in Seoul, September 17 through October 2, 1988, to call on our brothers and sisters around the world to declare a moratrium on all forms of strife violence and terror, casting aside weapons of conflict and hatred, and to make this gathering of our best athletes a festival of peace. It is our fervent hope and prayer that the Seoul Olympics, the biggest in Olympic history with 161 nations participating, will be a catalyst for securing enduring peace.

In the name of all peace loving man and women, this appeal for peace, endorsed individually by those who uphold the ideal, is adopted as a declaration at the Seoul Assembly of Olympeace on this 12th day of September Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Eight"
