The Gopher Hole Museum was first opened in 1996. Construction of the museum was helped by a grant from the provincial government. It was intended to be a homage to the areas greatest pest, the gopher.

The museum really put Torrington on the map when PETA heard about it made a big deal of the idea of stuffed gophers. Since then the popularity of the museum has exploded with visitors coming from all over the world to see the exhibits.
