At the coordinates above, there is a small bust of the likeness of Edward "Doc" Ricketts, a notable marine biologist and friend of Nobel Laureate, John Steinbeck, was hit by the Del Monte Express train on May 8, 1948.
Probably best remembered for his cameo appearance in several of John Steinbeck's novels (Cannery Row, Sweet Thursday, In Dubious Battle, Grapes of Wrath), Doc was a well known and notable marine biologist of the area.
The rail line that once carried the Del Monte Express is now a bike trail and the crossing has a small statue of Doc as well as a pair of benches, a portion of the tracks, and the crossing guard that used to warn people of an approaching train.
