West Cross or Rolvenden Windmill is located on the Benenden Road near Rolvenden.
There is evidence that a windmill has stood on or near this site since 1556. This windmill is a post mill built to mill corn in 1772. It has a single storey roundhouse and four sails.
The mill last worked on two common sails and two spring sails but now carries four common sails.
The windshaft is wood with a cast iron poll end and there are two pairs of millstones arranged Head and Tail.
The winding was carried out with a tailpole.
Although the mill bears the date 1772 it is believed to be older and could be the mill that is marked on the 1596 map.
The original roundhouse was demolished during the First World War and the ladder giving access to the mill collapsed in 1917. By the mid 1950s the mill became increasingly delapidated and became derelict.
In 1956 the mill was restored by Thompson's, the Alford millwrights and the work was paid for by Mr & Mrs Barham in memeory of their son John Nicholas Barham who had been killed in a road accident.
The mill had been painted white but during this retoration was tarred.
New common sails were fitted and a new brick roundhouse was built.
The mill is fixed in position with steel girders supporting the mill from below.
The mill is in private hands and cannot be visited.
The co-ordinates are those at the gate to the property.
