Crinkle Crags is so named because of it's shape when seen from the valley below,it's ridge is a series of rugged ups and downs, these tops are known as crinkles, and there are 5 of them as well as Shelter crags which also occupy th ridge,Wainwright describes the ridge walk of the mountain Crinkle Crags as "a fellwalkers delight, full of interest",but not recommended in bad weather, for it is easy to go astray here amongst the the twists and turns of the rocky ridge.
The summit is the 2nd.Crinkle South along the ridge, the view from here is splendid in clear conditions, and looking West is one of the best views of the ScaFell massive, and to the NNE is a great prospect of Bow Fell.
Well known on the descent of Crinkle is the Bad Step,a place along the ridge where great care must be taken as a gully has to be negotiated through and this is blocked by 2 chock stones, the gully can be bypassed by a long detour, but with care most seem to manage OK.
Below the Crinkle is Red Tarn a popular stop off point, and a place of wild beauty.
Altitude in Feet: 2816
