Established in 1800 the Catskill Turnpike - actually incorporated as The Susquehanna Turnpike Road - was a 95 mile long road beginning in Catskill, NY and traversing almost due west to the Susquehanna River at what was known as Wattles Ferry (todays Unadilla, NY).
From "Ruts in the Road" Vol. 2 by John E. Raitt:
"It was a 95 mile road with a small stone marker to desginate each mile along the route and 10 Toll Gates to bar the road and collect revenue. The funds were used to maintain the roadway and provide dividends for the stockholders.
"Each of the small reddish-brown milestones bore the inscription "__ Miles to Catskill." Was it any wonder then, that local people always reffered to the highway as "The Catskill Turnpike?"
Many markers have disappeared over the years, this particular one has been preserved by having a stone encasement mortared around it.
