Nathan Rapoport designed the memorial in 1964. He has constructed other memorials, including a Memorial to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Warsaw, Poland, a monument at Vad VaShem in Jerusalem, and an American monument in Jersey City, NJ to the American Liberators of the Concentration camps.
Upon first glance this monument appears as an abstract shape, like many of the modern sculptures found throughout Philadelphia. Upon close inspection, however, one makes out the horrified faces and twisted bodies of people who seem to have been poured over each other. The screaming face of a boy amidst the flames is haunting.
