The Mission Trail Nature Preserve, encompasses 35 acres of all that remains of a section of trail that connected the nearby San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission and Monterey.

Mission Trail Park encompasses 35 acres of unspoiled native vegetation, containing a rich diversity of habitats - meadows, a grove of Oak trees and a dense Monterey Pine forest. This is a perfect spot for an early morning jaunt or an evening stroll - perfect for bird watching, jogging and walking your dog. The park extends from Mountain View Avenue (just east of downtown Carmel) southward to the Carmel Mission. There are two main entrances - one on Mountain View Ave and one on Rio Road across from the Carmel Mission.
The coordinates above are for the Southern end of the trail. The hike is only about a mile or so, and the trail is both wide and well graded. Probably built in the late 1700's, it no doubt had relatively heavy traffic with the bustling activity over the hill in Monterey.
Feature Discription: Mission Trail was probably once part of the El Camino Real, which nowadays most people consider to parallel the nearby highway.

Beginning of the road: The road begins at a gate adjacent to Rio Road, just across the street from the nearby Mission.l
End of the road: This particular section, and the only surviving section that I am aware of, ends on Hatton Road about 1.5 miles in length.
