These 6 Jangseung (Korean totems) were carved in South Korea and were a gift to Airdrie on the 10th anniversary of the twinning of the cities of Airdrie and Gwacheon, South Korea. The largest ones stand about 16 ft high while the smaller ones are about 9 ft.

These totems are made in the shape of a persons head that is erected on the street at the entrance part of the village or at a temple in Korea. As a form of civil religion it undertakes the role of village guardian deity as well as the boundary sign or road mark between regions. usually the Jangseung are erected as a pair, the male Jangseung representing the Great General Under Heaven and the female Jangseung representing the Underground Woman General.

Jangseung has a history of two millennia and as part of the folk religion it is placed in the entrance area of the village to bring well-being to the village and prevent all misfortunes.
