Punta S'Arenella is the first lighthouse on the Catalan coastline from north to south. The lighthouse was built in response to a request by the Coastguard Society in Girona to the Ministry of Public Works for a lighthouse in that area to make it easier and safer for fishing boats to return at night.
The first plans for the lighthouse were drawn up in 1898 and 1904 and it was initially planned to build one with a sixth order lens in La Llosa. After studying other possible locations, a decision was taken in 1906 to build it in Punta S'Arenella because not only does this area mark the entrance to the bay, but it also has a wider area of visibility from the sea.
The project and the building of the lighthouse, which it was finally decided would have a fourth order lens, began in 1911 and was commissioned to the prestigious French company, Barbier, Benard " Turenne.
Punta S'Arenella lighthouse was lit up for the first time on 16 December 1913. It initially had a Maris petrol lamp but this was replaced in 1933 with an acetylene lamp. An electric lamp was eventually installed in 1955 and, in 1981, it was replaced once again, this time with new electric equipment with a gas reserve.
The initial building has a square base that measures 15 metres by 15 metres and a square tower that is 4 metres by 4 metres and 15 metres high. An adjacent building was added to the initial construction as an extension to the lighthouse keeper's living area.
The lighthouse's dioptric light has a range of 13 nautical miles and flashes every 5 seconds.
