A statue of the Angel Moroni stands atop the Hill Cumorah, located about four miles south of Palmyra, New York. It is written that this is where Angel Moroni gave Joseph Smith the gold plates from which he translated the Book of Mormon. The ten foot tall bronze statue, mounted on a 25-foot shaft of granite, points toward heaven with the right hand and holds a replica of the gold plates with the left. It was dedicated by Church President Heber J. Grant on July 21, 1935.
Angel Moroni was the last prophet in the Western Hemisphere whose history is recorded in the Book of Mormon.
There is a wonderful visitors center at the base of the hill that is open year round, with access to the statue through several flights of stairs, or by car via an access road near the center. Each year in July, Hill Cumorah is the site of a live play, portraying the story behind the passing of the Gold Plates to Joseph Smith near this location by the Angel Moroni.
