The St. James Parish dates to 1737 when Captain John Holbrook and 6 other men built the first building to be used by the Episcopal Ecclesiastical Society with the building being completed the following year. Until 1748 the services were conducted by itinerant missionary Anglican priests. In 1748 Rev. Richard Mansfield became the first full time rector of the parish and held that post for the next 72 years until his death at the age of 96. During the Revolutionary War, he was a loyalist and had to flee for a period of time, however after the war he became a loyal citizen of the new nation. In 1783 he was one of 10 Episcopal priest who traveled to Woodbury, CT to elect Rev. Samuel Seabury as the first American Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

As the community of Derby continued to grow a new church building was needed which was constructed close to the first, this new building was consecrated as St. James’ Church on November 20, 1799.

As the community continued to expand its center changed and in response to this a new church was to be built near the center of the growth. The new building was built facing the Derby Green. This stone church was consecrated on April 11, 1843. This stone church is the present church and has been modified over the years including the addition of the chime of bells for the tower was installed and rung for the first time on July 4, 1867.

Beginning in 1970, a close relationship was established between the St. James Parish and the Immanuel Parish in Ansonia. For twenty years the parishes shared a rector. In 1991 the parishes combined and became the Immanuel St. James Parish and worship in the St. James Church.
