Marker Text:
On September 5, 1813 off Monhegan Island in the Gulf of Maine, the American brig "Enterprise", commanded by 28 year old Lt. William Burrows, engaged in battle with the British brig, "Boxer", commanded by 29 year old Capt. Samuel Blythe. Both ships fired broad sides on each other at close range for forty five minutes before the badly damaged Boxer surrendered. Capt. Blythe was killed instantly and Lt. Burrows died from injuries during the encounter. Both men were buried with full honors, side by side in Portland's Eastern Cemetery.

Located some 40 miles from the incident, but as close as a marker can get since it was at sea. This city park includes USS Portland Memorial and a Memorial to the Artic voyages during WWII trying to get supplies to Russia. Russia and Britain put up the memorial.
Fort Allen Park is only a part of the eastern Promenade which stretches some ½ mile around the shore line.
