(E)Decades long fishery and fishing-industries were the mainly earnings of Urk. Urk was until 1940 an isle in the middle of the Zuiderzee (IJsselmeer). At that time the harbour was full of boats. (Kotters)
Fishery is and was a high-risk job. Between 1865 and 1904 210 Urker fishermen never came back from their job at sea. In 1968 Queen Juliana unveiled a monument. At the walls around that monument are shields with their names.
NL) Eeuwenlang was de visserij en de visserijindustrie de belangrijkste inkomstenbron van Urk. Urk lag tot 1940 midden in de Zuiderzee/het IJsselmeer.
Visserman is een gevaarlijk beroep, alleen al tussen 1865 en 1904 kwamen 210 Urker vissermannen niet meer terug van hun werk. Op de muur rond dit monument staan de namen van hen die bij hun werk op zee het leven lieten.
