St. Bega was an Irish Noble woman who founded the 7th.century Benedictine nunnery,at what is now the town of St.Bees.
The Present building pre dates Norman times,The chancel and nave are from 950AD. with the arch between the South transept and the the chancel is from the mid 14th.century,restoration was carried out in 1874.
The font is dated about 1300 and has an octagonal lead lined bowl, while the 14th. century lead crucifix which hangs over the pulpit is similar to the one in St.Alban's cathedral.
Another interesting feature is the wrought iron hour glass which was used to time the length of the sermons.
Because of the church's beautiful setting by the lake and with Ullock Pike mountain in the background it is very popular with weddings.
