This beautifully maintained boat is typical of the small commercial fishing boats which supplied Monterey's Cannery Row with sardines and squid or caught fresh fish for the wharf's many fish wholesalers. Although it appears the Francesca would still be seaworthy, there is no place in modern fisheries for a two-man-crew old wooden boat. The city of Monterey operates the public harbor facilities in Monterey Bay and placed the Francesca at the entrance to the harbor parking area as a welcoming "seamark".
