The U-505 was constructed starting June 1940 and launched May 1941. The U505 was involved in 12 patrols sinking 8 ships. On June 4, 1944 while on patrol off the west coast of Africa the U-505 was captured by a U.S. Navy task force led by the U.S.S. Chatelain. This was the first ship capture the U.S. Navy had since the War of 1812. When the u-boat was captured many classified documents were also recovered which aided the Allied forces in breaking codes used in U-boat operations.
The U-505 has been restored and is on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. In addition the the normal museum admission a tour of the interior of the u-boat is $5 additional and is worth the visit.
