The church here is dedicated to St.Augustine, the first Archbishop of Canterbury.
The old church was pulled down in 1769 when it became a ruin,a new one was built to a plan by Smeaton (of Eddyson Lighthouse fame),but this was not a success and was pulled down in 1869 to be replaced by the present church of St.Augustine.
The church spire was later added in 1887.
Standing inside the church is the famous Derwentwater clock, which came from Dilston Hall, the home of The Earl of Derwentwater, the clock is of 16th.century origin, and has only one hand.
The church bell which was cast in 1714 also came from the Earl, the bell was recast in 1845 and is now one of a peel of ten bells.
The church we see today is large but still only occupies about one third of the site of the earlier churches,
