William Sweet, Jr. came from West Greenwich in Kent County, Rhode Island. The book, Revolutionary Defences of Rhode Island (Edward Field published 1896), identifies William Sweet Jr. as one of the members of Brigadier General Nathan Miller's force of 300 men assigned to protect the port of Newport, Rhode Island.
The marker for William Sweet, Jr. is located in an unmarked cemetery with markers for many of the Sweet family. The cemetery is small with about 40 graves located in West Greenwich. By tracing with a finger, we were able to find the stone of William Sweet, Jr., a Revolutionary War veteran.
The grave site is located on an old dirt road named the New London Turnpike. The road and the land of the cemetery are now part of a Wildlife Management Area that is open to hunting between the first Saturday of October and the last day in February. If you are visiting during that time, please wear blaze orange. The closest parking for this cemetery is N 41 37.070 W 071 35.777 . The round-trip walk to the cemetery is about 2 miles.
