The Tower of London was built as a fortress-castle, but over its history, it has also been a prison and place of execution. Many of the prisoners have been not common criminals but a "Who's Who" of European aristocracy and well-to-do.

The first prisoner was Ranulf Flambard, Bishop of Durham, who was found guilty of extortion in 1100. (He eventually escaped).

John Balliol King of Scotland spent time in the Salt Tower from 1296 to 1299, but he was not restricted to the tower. According to the informational plaque, he was allowed out of the Tower for hunting parties.

Even the future Queen Elizabeth I was imprisoned for two months in 1554.

The last "serious" prisoner was Nazi Rudolf Hess in May 1941, although there were a couple of temporary prisoners who were avoiding National Service held at the Tower of London in 1952.

The Salt Tower has preserved many of the etchings and graffiti the prisoners have made over the centuries.
