The Calvary Episcopal Church was founded in 1855. For many years the church held services in homes, the courthouse or other available churches. The congregation built their first church building in 1872. The first church was damaged extensively in a fire on Easter morning 1898. The church was quickly repaired but the congregation decided to build a new church closer to the campus. The Rollins family offered to pay for the new building in memory of Captain James Hickman Rollins, who had died recently. The Rollins family selected Miss Mary Louise Hale of Columbia as the architect. She was able to incorporate some of the historic furnishing and windows from the previous church into the new church. The new church was completed in less than a year and was dedicated by Bishop Daniel Tuttle in June 1899. The church continues to serve the congregation.
