This monument has been dedicated to those lost at sea. It was erected due to the tireless efforts of the family of Horry County native Johnny W. Brown who was Lost At Sea on April 2, 2005. The family wants the monument to pay homage to every South Carolinian lost at sea and is taking applications from anyone who wish to have their lost family members or friends added to the monument. The plan is to add names every year, and the family has set up a committee to verify any claims that come in.

The Lost At Sea Memorial was established in April of 2005 by the family of Johnny W. Brown, a native of Horry County and a commercial fisherman out of Murrells Inlet. On April 2, 2005, the fishing vessel that Johnny was aboard was hit by a 30-40 feet rogue wave. Two of the crew members were rescued but Johnny was lost at sea.

As a tribute to Johnny and all of those lost at sea, his family, with the help of many, raised money to place a monument in Morse Park Landing in Murrells Inlet, SC. The monument was unveiled on April 2, 2006 on the one year anniversary of the loss of Johnny.

The monument is almost 8 feet tall and consists of 3 black granite sides. On the side facing the jetties of Murrells Inlet, is a life sized etching of Johnny. On the other two sides names will be added yearly, if needed, of others lost at sea. At the time of the unveiling 17 names all together appeared on the monument. These people came from all walks of life. Some date back to 1925. There are rescue pilots, a harbor pilot, fishermen, and crew members from military vessels to name a few. They are loved and missed and now will be eternally honored.
