"Established on July 29, 2005, Sector Lake Michigan serves as the operational command for Coast Guard search and rescue, law enforcement, aids to navigation, icebreaking, marine safety and homeland security operations on Lake Michigan.
The Sector oversees the operations and administration of 22 units, including 19 Search and Rescue Stations, one Marine Safety Unit, one Marine Safety Detachment and one Sector Field Office.
The Sector is comprised of more than 500 Active Duty, 200 Reserve, and 1300 Auxiliary/Civilians. Sector Lake Michigan is one of 35 newly established Sector commands throughout the nation.
Sector Lake Michigan is the Coast Guard's largest Sector command in terms of number of field commands - 24.
Sector Lake Michigan combines the former Group Milwaukee, Marine Safety Office Milwaukee, Marine Safety Office Chicago, and Group Grand Haven. The Sector Commander's authorities include Captain of the Port, Officer in Charge of Marine Inspections, Federal on Scene Coordinator, Federal Maritime Security Coordinator and SAR Mission Coordinator."
