The first wastewater treatment tanks were installed at the NWTF in 1959. At that time only a small portion of Nashua's flow came into the facility. In 1974, the facility was expanded and new interceptor lines in the city assured that all wastewater flow came into the NWTF. The facility was upgraded to secondary treatment in 1989 with a design flow of 16 million gallons per day. In 1998, the city started construction of a 10 million dollar anaerobic digester complex, which went on line in December 2000.
What is the capacity of the facility?: Design Flow = 16,000,000 gallon per day

Describe the biological treatment technology used.:
Primary and secondary processes are used to create sludge which is then sent to the new anaerobic digester complex. In the 1.3 million gallon egg shaped primary digester, the sludge is held for 20 days. Here the solids are further broken down into carbon dioxide, water and methane gas. The methane is sent to a generator to produce electricity and to a boiler to produce heat for the digestion process.

How are biosolids (sludge) managed?: Presently the dewatered sludge is discharged to conveyors, loaded onto trucks, and hauled by White Mountain Resources to farms as a soil enhancer.

What technology is used for disinfection prior to dicharge of treated water?: Sodium hypochlorite a strong bleach is then added to the effluent to kill any remaining harmful bacteria. The disinfected effluent is then completely neutralized to remove excess hypochlorite in order to protect aquatic wildlife in the river

Who is the owner/operator fo the facility?: City of Nashua, NH

How is the facility governed?: Division of Public Works for the City of Nashua, NH

What is the website of the WWTP?: [Web Link]

Please post at least 2 original photographs of the site. We would much rather see photos of the plant itself as opposed to the front office, but we also understand that security and site layout may limit your opportunities.
