Mile post on the Lampool Roundabout which is the junction of the old A22, now Straight Half Mile, and the new Maresfield by-pass, the new A22, in Marefield showing distance of 40 miles from St Mary Le Bow Church [Bow Bells] in the City of London. Hence the bells on the post.
Bow bells were made famous as it was these bells that made Dick Whittington return to London and become Lord Mayor and also in the nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons" where Bow bells authority ends the rhyme "I do not know says the Great Bell of Bow".
It is these bells that if you are born within the sound of determines that you are a Cockney or true Londoner.
