Mile post on old A22 in East Hoathly showing distance of 48 miles from St Mary Le Bow Church [Bow Bells] in the City of London. Hence the bells on the post.
Bow bells were made famous as it was these bells that made Dick Whittington return to London and become Lord Mayor and also in the nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons" where Bow bells authority ends the rhyme "I do not know says the Great Bell of Bow".
It is these bells that if you are born within the sound of determines that you are a Cockney or true Londoner.
