Rock City is considered one of the great wonders of New York State and is the site of the worlds' largest exposure of Quartz Conglomerate. These rocks were formed about 320 million years ago and are believed to have been deposited here during the Pennsylvanian Period. The huge rocks are several stories high with "alleys and streets" between them, giving the feeling of walking down the street of a city, with its tall buildings on both sides. There are several trails that start atop the huge rocks, then lead down stone stairways into the alleys and streets below, giving the visitor the full effect of the size of these massive rocks. At the entrance to Rock City, there is a gift shop that sells souveniers as well as a good variety of polished rocks taken from the the area, as well as some that are not native to the area. There is an admission fee to visit Rock City with adults paying $4.50 and kids under 12 years old can enter for $2.50. It is well worth the price.
