The Williston town hall is named for Thomas Chittenden (1730 - 1797), the town's first resident, a founding father of the Republic of Vermont and its first governor upon admission to the Union as the fourteenth state.

The town is named for Samuel Willis, a wealthy Quaker from Long Island, New York and the first person named in the 1763 grant, but "One-eyed Tom" was the first settler, and it remained his home until he died (except for roughly 11 years when the Revolutionary War forced him to relocate his family to Arlington). He is buried in a nearby cemetery.

Additionally, Williston is in Chittenden County.

Year it was dedicated: 1860
